Dreaming and Intuition
Theta brain wave activity ranges between the frequencies of 4 to 8 Hz making it the second slowest brain wave frequency. This frequency is commonly associated with the early stages of sleep and is present during dreams, deep meditation and while having profound spiritual experiences. Accessing this brain wave state facilitates a deeper level of emotional connection within oneself.
Theta wave activity has also been linked to a heightened sense of awareness and increased intuitive skills. Being in this brain wave state allows one to connect to the subconscious mind and change negative thought patterns or beliefs – this explains why this brain wave state is unduced during hypnosis.
Difficulties that may arise from being in the theta state are similar to those of being in the alpha state; you may have difficulty focusing, your mind may wander frequently and you may feel sleepy. People experiencing higher amounts of theta waves can be more impulsive and will often speak or act before considering the consequences of their behavior. They may sense the underlying energy in a social situation – this makes it difficult for them to articulate an “appropriate” social response.
Hyperactivity is another recognizable ADHD symptom associated with theta waves. This seems counter-intuitive since the theta brain wave state is associated with sleeping, dreaming and meditation. However, while experiencing high amounts of theta waves, the body needs much less energy to function.
This can create a surplus of energy in the body. There are two ways an individual can react to this issue. Some people feel an inner-restlessness and want to put this surplus of energy to use, creating hyperactive behavior. Others feel under-stimulated or bored and become lethargic.
If one were to personify the theta brain wave state, it would likely be the Wise Yogi. He is connected with his inner voice and is ‘One’ with the Cosmos. He sees and experiences things that others cannot. He engages life with a higher level of consciousness. But to some, he may also seem out of touch with reality. He does not function in a way that westerners would consider “normal”. He is both literally and figuratively on another plane of existence.
