Every year, the Nobel Committee gives the Nobel Prize to a group or individual who has promoted world peace. Recently, the committee gave the Nobel Peace Prize to the United Nations and its top official, Secretary General Kofi Annan. The committee said that the only road to world's peace and cooperation goes by way of the United Nations. Kofi Annan also received special recognition for "bringing new life to the organization." Annan was born in the African country of Ghana and studied at universities in Ghana, Switzerland, and the United States. He became secretary general of the United Nations in 1997. Since then, he has worked hard to solve problems such as AIDS and world hunger, and he has tried to resolve conflicts between countries. He surely has a difficult and challenging job, but many people have praised Kofi Annan because of his commitment to world peace.
