New employee orientation is a critical first step in creating a healthy climate for communication and effective working relationships; the first day on the job may forever define how the employee feels about working in the library. The orientation program shouldn't attempt to cover everything on the first day or even the first week. The plan for the first day might include providing the employee with a written packet of information about the library and an organization chart; introducing the employee to all coworkers; touring the facility; explaining the procedures for breaks, lunches, parking, and paydays; and completing any necessary paperwork.
