Total colony counts in raw milk within the range 1–2 3 105 can be easily
reached as well (Mossel et al., 1995). Cleaning the udder and the teats with appropriate
antiseptics before and after milking can minimize the hazards of tissue damage
and infections during milking (Burgess et al., 1994). Farmers should be educated to
make the best use of antibiotics, conform to hygienic rules and avoid handling milk
during sickness (Mossel and Gru¨n, 1971).
