Some manufacturers are seeing green manufacturing practices as a method of gaining market share. The growing population of environmentally conscious consumers prefers to do business with green businesses. Apple has invested heavily in building its green reputation. It has worked to remove or dramatically reduce the amount of lead in its displays. It has eliminated or reduced dangerous chemicals, including arsenic and mercury, and compounds such as PVC and BFR. Apple operates recycling programs in 97 percent of the countries where Macs, iPhones, and iPods are sold. It even reduced packaging materials to a minimum to save trees and eliminate Styrofoam.
