The plain coffin will be covered with ornate paneling and everything buried in flowers. To one side, supported on an easel, there is usually an enlarged photograph of the deceased. Before it will be a kneeling place (the prie-dieu of Western tradition) and a candel and incense stick receptacle. This arrangement will remain until all the chanting sessions have finished-three, seven, fifty, a hundred nights, or more. The funeral card will tell you how many sessions there will be. Chanting usually begins at 7:30 or 8:00 p.m. and may take an hour.
