Wai Kru-a traditional ceremony

EDUCATIONAL institutions throughout Thailand celebrate an ancient custom
“Wai Kru”, the ceremony of paying respect to teachers-in June or July, soon after the beginning of new academic year. Schools, colleges and universities all over the country observe Wai Kru to show respect to teachers. Wai Kru is held on a Thursday because Thursday’s star is the planet Jupiter. Astrologers believe that Jupiter is the “teacher star” since it gives knowledge concentration and wisdom. In Thailand, Thursday is considered to be the day on Which every student should pay respect to their teachers. Students believe that by doing so, they will receive merit and good luck in their studies throughout the academic year. The Wai Kru ceremony begins with the school principal lighting candles and incense sticks and plying homage to the Buddha image. All the students then take a vow to be loyal to the nation, the religion and the King, to behave well, work hard and obey the school rules. In return, the school principal gives blessing to the students.

Flowers have special importance

As the ceremony continues, the captains of every class will present symbolic flowers to the teachers. These flowers have special importance: the kem flower means a needle, to make the students sharpwitted __ “as sharp as a needle”! The makeua, or au bergine, symbolizes respect. The ya paraek, a kind of grass, has two meanings. First, no matter how hard you trample It or sit on it, this kind of grass will never prick you, so it is considered respectful and humble.
