Even for the sangha, although still following monastic practice, modernity has brought changes.
For example, modern education has removed the center of instruction from the monastery to secular institutions. Many monks and novices, too, have entered the monastic educational system.
There has also been a push for the revival of full ordination for bhikkunis (nuns) in the Theravada tradition. However, by remaining only partly ordained, present-day bhikkunis have more freedom from the supervision of male monks.
