Oil spills are the main cause of water pollution in the Antarctic; they kill thousands of emperor penguins each year. In addition to the oil spills, increasing shipping activities of tour ships in the region also add pollution to the water. Such pollution harms krill, fish and squid which are the main source of their food. Up to 30,000 gallons of polluted water from toilets and nearly 150,000 gallons of polluted water from showers and sinks are produced by tour ships daily. Since penguins are unable to fly, they rely on certain areas to catch their food. If the feeding areas are damaged by pollution, they would certainly be extinct very soon.
