a. Pouchitis. It is a chronic inflammation of the ileal pouch. The treatment with probiotics such as L. rhamnosus GG and L. acidophilus reduced the risk of pouchitis due to decreased mucosal inflammation [59,60]. b. Crohn’s disease. This disease can involve the whole gastrointestinal tract and is characterized by inflammatory processes occurring deeper in the tissues. Among other typical treatments L. rhamnosus is used aiming at decreasing the rate and the severity of disease after surgery [61]. c. Ulcerative colitis. It is an acute or chronic disease only affecting the large bowel. LAB probiotics (L. acidophilus) provide some promising initial indications [53].
