Basic oral hygiene
The main objective of oral hygiene is to maintain the
mouth in good condition (Gibson et al 2012) by:
■ Maintaining oral function.
■ Keeping oral mucosa and the lips clean, soft, moist
and intact.
■ Removing food debris and dental plaque without
damaging the gingiva.
■ Alleviating pain and discomfort thereby facilitating
oral intake.
■ Promoting patient wellbeing and comfort.
