“Stop the car at the next corner.” Said the inspector. He got out and then leaned back in the car. “Sergeant, bring the flashlight and come with me. Jones. You wait here. ”
They walked silently down the road, until a dark shape looming up told them that they had reached the spot.
“Clarke, sir” came a whisper. “Good evening. Sir.”
“Anything happened?”
“Lights flickering around upstairs, sir. Looked like a powerful flashlight. Nothing below.”
The inspector grunted. “Where are the others?”
“Smith’s watching the back door. Allen is by the next door leading to the garden, covering the French windows, and Boydell is acting as contact for us. ”
“Um. We couldn’t do better than that. Let’s see. It’s nearly an hour since that report came in. I think we’d better go in and see what is going on.”
They walked up to the front door Their knock echoed through the empty house. The flickering flashlight upstairs went out, and a shout from Allen sent them running toward him. Soon the sounds of the chase died away in the distance.
