Methanol is used widely because it is relatively cheaper than other alcohols and has chemical and physical advantages over other alcohols (Ma & Hanna, 1999). In theory 3 moles of alcohols are required to neutralize 1 mole of triglyceride to produce 3 moles of fatty acid methyl ester (FAME) and 1 mole of glycerin (Leung et al., 2010). A good catalyst is also needed to obtain a reasonable rate for transesterification of triglycerides and its conversion to biodiesel (Lotero et al., 2005).
