Similarly to P. leucosticta, agamospores, neutral spores, and archeospores are not known in P. purpurea either
(Brodie & Irvine, 2003). The blade form of P. purpurea is found throughout the year, although they are
more common in the summer months. Reproductive structures are also found year round with a peak in August
and September. Both P. purpurea and P. leucosticta are monoecious with both female and male gametangia appearing
on a single blade. In P. purpurea male and female gametangia
are clearly separated with the male section appearing
pale yellow and the female section appearing as a dark red region
of the blade (Brodie & Irvine, 2003).
