Specialized machines using a closed-loop central venous access device (CVAD) inserted into the
femoral vein also can be used for invasive cooling. Cold water circulates through balloons on the catheter tip,cooling the blood. These systems have been used extensively to cool cardiac arrest patients and the research suggests they provide excellent control throughout therapeutic hypothermia (see Phases of therapeutic hypothermia)
