Seclusion prevalence statistics in the United State are outdated, but have been reported to range anywhere from 2% to 6% of all admitted patients to psychiatric units. A more recent study from Canada reported that of 2,127 psychiatric inpatients hospitalized, 23.2% were secluded with or without restraint. Restraint data, not including seclusion, have been collected since 2006 with the National Database of Nursing Quality Indicators. found that although seclusion itself in was not associated with improvement in mental status at discharge, it was associated with a 12 day increase in length of stay.
