In summary, the lack of complete nursing data sets
and the complexity of nursing resources and practice
patterns have created challenges in getting standardized
labels of nursing interventions, actual cost per
nursing intervention and nursing-sensitive outcomes,
which are the key requirements for the traditional
CEA. Given the limitations in conducting a traditional
CEA of hospital nursing care, there is a great need to
develop new methodological approaches. One such
approach is path modelling, which compares the
effects of nursing interventions on two outcomes (cost
and clinical outcome) at a time by controlling other
contextual factors, thus making it unnecessary to
obtain the actual cost per nursing intervention. This
study used path modelling to obtain proxy measures
of cost per nursing intervention and effects on complications
(standardized estimates) and then compared
the cost-effectiveness of nursing interventions.
