The high-fiber vegetable diet resultedin greater fecal cholesterol and bile acid outputs than theother 2 diets. Urinary mevalonate excretion was also greater onthe high-fiber vegetable diet compared with the control indicatingincreased cholesterol biosynthesis to replenish the increasedsterol loss.57 There was no evidence of high-fecalpropionate levels or reduced insulin secretion as indicated byreduced urinary C-peptide output to explain the lower cholesterollevels on the high-fiber vegetable diet.
