these values. and those who provided mixed or conditional responses. For acts, participants
generally endorsed the teaching of most values. with the exception of 13-year-olds' and
adults judgments of religion, where lower percentages of endorsements of the teaching of this
value were given. Support for the teaching of patriotism declined with age, while support for
the teaching of democracy (a political value) increased with age. For laws requiring the
teaching of values. several patterns are evident. Youngrr children were more apt to see laws
regarding the teaching of a variety of values as acceptable in both farnily and school contexts.
However. older children and adults were more likely to regard laws requiring the teaching of
values in the farnily as unacceptable. In contrast. in the school. laws requiring the teaching of
moral. political. and character values tended to be endorsed by adults and 1 3-year-olds. while
laws requiring the teaching of other values, such as patriotism or religion. were rejected. Laws
requiring the teaching of a political value (democracy) in the schools were seen as more
acceptable by older participants.
