What research topics have been pursued?Over MAR’s 25 years, performance measurement and rewards, and cost management have been most frequently investigated (90 and 86 papers, respectively) followed by management con- trol systems and implementation and change (60 and 57 papers respectively), budgetary control and inter-organisational controls (34 and 30 papers, respectively) (see Fig. 11). Cost management has declined in absolute and relative terms, whereas performance measurement and rewards and management control systems have increased in both respects throughout the five periods (see Fig. 12).
