The effectsofdietarysupplementationof Moringaoleifera leaf meal(MOLM)asagrowth
promoteronthegrowthperformance,apparentdigestibility,digestiveorgansize,and
carcass yieldofbroilerchickenswereinvestigated.Atotalof2400one-day-oldCobb-500
broiler chicksofmixedsexwererandomlyallocatedtofivedietarytreatmentsinsix
replications of80birdsperpen.Fresh,greenandundamagedmature M. oleifera leaves
werecollectedfromanumberoftreesfromthesamevillagetoavoidvariationsinsoil
micronutrient content;andweregrindedtoproduceMOLM.Dietarytreatmentswereas
follows: positivecontrol(þC) with668gsalinomycinand500gzincbacitracinperkgof
feed; MOLMlow (ML; 1,3and5);MOLMmedium (MM;3,9and15g);MOLMhigh (MH;5,15
and 25g)]perkgoffeed;andanegativecontrol(C; withoutsupplementation).Diets
werefedfor35dinstarter,growerandfinisherphases;andbirdswereprovidedfeedand
water ad libitum. At35dofage,12birdspertreatment,twofromeachreplicatepen,were
randomly selected,electricallystunnedat70Vandkilledbycervicaldislocationfor
determination ofcarcassandorganweights.Birdweightat7and21dofage,birdsfedMH
had thehighestBW,while þC hadthelowest(Po0.05).Nosignificantdifferenceswere
observedinFIbetweentreatmentsduringperiodsfrom0to21dand0to35d;FCRwas
the highest(Po0.05)inbirdssupplementedwithMOLM,exceptforMM;andwasthe
lowestinthoseonthe þC. BirdsinMLhadthehighestthighweights,andMHhadthe
lowest(Po0.05). GizzarderosionscorewasthelowestinMHandthehighestinMM
(Po0.001).Mortalityratewasthehighest(Po0.05) inMHfromday22to28andwasthe
lowestinMLandMM(1.3%vs.0.21%);andwasmainlyduetosuddendeath.Therewere
no significantdifferencesinapparentdigestibilityforash,etherextract(EE),crudefiber
(CF),crudeprotein(CP),aciddetergentfiber(ADF)andneutraldetergentfiber(NDF)
amongtreatments.Itwasconcludedthatsupplementationof M. oleifera leaf mealupto
25 gperkgoffeeddidnotimpairnutrientutilizationefficiency,butenhancedthebird0s
