The silty clay used in this study was obtained from the Taipei soil at
a depth of 3 to 4 m. Table 1 lists the physical properties and mineral
compositions for the soil. As listed in Table 1, kaolinite (35%) and illite
(56%) were the major clay minerals which were identified from the
soil samples using X-ray diffraction. Average liquid and plastic limits
were 38% and 20%, respectively.
