Angela Pneuman’s coming of age story feels both completely classic and contemporary at the same time. Lay It On My Heart is the story of Charmaine Peake, a precocious thirteen year old Kentuckian, as she grapples with all that growing up entails: puberty, an increasingly strained relationship with her mother, the trials and tribulations of preteen prurient interests, and a challenging examination of the faith that has always been a guiding light in her life and in her relationship to her father. Beautifully written and filled with dark humor, this is the sort of story about adolescence that appeals to adults reflecting back on that turbulent time as much as to teens in the throes of it.
