The conversation continued for a few more moments, with each task force member airing concerns, constraints, and downright fear at the possibility of outsourcing. Doug decided it was time to step in and bring some perspective to the discussion. Doug was a firm believer in the importance of "clearing the clutter" so that an objective discussion could be held, but he knew that negativity could become contagious. Doug said, "Well,I think it is good to get this out in the open. We need to identify the possible risks associated with outsourcing various activities. We've been developing the tools to help us weigh realistically the pros and cons of this type of decision. So, I am confident we'll make the right choices for Olympus. Besides, let's keep in mind that no one has said we will outsource anything. The executive steering committee has given us the charge to look at outsourcing as one possibility as we focus on improving the design and the management of our supply chains. This is a real opportunity for us to shape the outsourcing discussion at Olympus. Hold onto that thought. I'd like to take the next hour to do a little nominal group brainstorming. Let's address each of the steering committee's four questions in groups of three. Then we'll report our ideas. Before we get started, let's take a 10-minute break to clear our thoughts. We need to take a serious, objective look at if and how outsourcing can make us more competitive now and in the future. See you in 10 minute.
