A videotape of actual art teaching which depicts sequential lessons within a unit of instruction was produced for this study as was an interview with a veteran art teacher. Students art teachers observed, then responded to specific variables in the two videotapes (i.e., key art concepts, and the art learners' prior knowledge). Research questions considered within the study's three-phase experimental design were: (a) What key concepts do student art teachers choose for art instruction? (b) How do student art teachers utilize learners' prior knowledge in lesson planning? (c) What are the effects of teacher education interventions on student art teachers' content and pedagogical knowledge? and (d) What are the roles of student art teachers' knowledge base, knowledge-seeking strategies, and dispositions in their lesson planning?
