As Singapore does not produce much food, it imports more than 90% of its food products. It is one of Asia’s largest importers of agricultural products and processed foods. In 2011, Singapore imported US$12.1 billion worth of agricultural products, processed food and drinks. In fact, the country has the highest food consumption levels in Southeast Asia on a per capita basis. Due to high per capita consumption growth, Singapore’s food and beverage industry is expected to continue growing in the near future. Food retail in particular, which represents 40% of total retail spending in Singapore, is expected to increase as a result of higher incomes and rising visitor arrivals.
