India’s first sports utility vehicle, the Tata Safari, was launched in 1998 and its independently designed Indica V2 became the number one car in its segment in India in 2001. Also during 2001, Tata exited its joint venture with Daimler Chrysler and entered into a product agreement with UK-based MG Rover in 2002.
