The industry uses the CSR approach perhaps because it has been politically correct to do so. Further development of sustainable processes is needed, and in a number of ways. For example, there is no evidence that associations (or any other private, peak or governing body for that matter) are providing defining parameters to guide the environmental impact evaluation process. Should impacts be measured only for the time that the event is actually staged? Should it include the entire planning/lead in time? How long after the event has ended should be included? In some way, it may be useful to consider the economic multiplier effect but within an environmental context i.e. an environmental multiplier. There is a dire need for event managers to adopt an accreditation program within the industry. Alternately, if conformity cannot be established, a level of uniformity should be sought in recommending sustainability accreditation programs deemed to be appropriate international benchmarks.
