don't have the impression that she meant that one has to structurely ignore a crying child -that would be abuse- but some parents become very neurotic when a child cries doing everything possible to avoid it. We have a daughter who for the better part of 9 years (she is 10 now and rarely does it anymore) tried to underscore any point she had in any conversation with tears, this could be as often as three times in five minutes. We have a rule now that if it becomes too much she can cry in the toilet and after that talk to us about it without crying. Because it really is about emotionally overpowering a discussion. It worked.
