In conclusion, lower extremity fatigue alters the recruitment
strategy of the quadriceps and the adduction and flexion knee
moments during squatting and lunging. Future studies should
explore the contributions of other lower extremity muscles to knee
loading during squatting and lunging and the bilateral effects of
lower extremity neuromuscular fatigue. Lunging challenges quadriceps
activation better than squatting in young, healthy women
and may be more useful for training and rehabilitation programs
focused on lower extremity muscle training.
