The lengthy rallies on both sides were clearly aimed at disrupting, even paralysing the workings of government. By occupying or blockading key government or business centres they aimed to force their political enemies out out of power, including the prime minister, the cabinet and, in the case of the UDD, important symbols of power like the Privy Council president.
