The most extensively evaluated tool seems to be the MNA, which has been validated with older adult populations from the very frail to the healthy in a variety of settings, such as elective surgery, outpatient clinics and nursing homes. Sensitivity and specificity have also been investigated in several studies. In a review article by Guigoz, the MNA was mentioned as a screening and assessment tool with a reliable scale that clearly defines thresholds usable by health-care professionals. The MNA is considered acceptable in terms of the time required for completion and its simplicity; although concerns have been raised about the transferability of the tool to countries in which it has not been validated, it is widely recognized as a useful nutritional assessment tool.
