Students were assigned to one of 15 five-person teams and were given a specific
topic within the human resource management domain to research. The research
focus required each team to investigate the local/regional labor market conditions in
both Cleveland, Ohio and Omaha, Nebraska and then compare and contrast the
two regions. Five unique research projects were assigned, with each project being
assigned to three teams.
To facilitate collaboration, the technology platform Zoho projects was adopted.
This is a free internet software application that includes features such as a wiki, tasks
and milestones, a project forum (discussion board), and a calendar function. Students
were provided with a tutorial on how to use Zoho and also given an in-class overview
of the software. Teams were required to utilize the Zoho platform at a minimum
but were permitted to utilize alternate methods of communicating if they so chose.
The mandatory use of a software application replicates the reality in most organizations
as corporate information technology staff maintain only a limited number of applications
for employees (Raghupathi, 2007).
After the initial classroom meeting, each team worked on their own to accomplish
the team tasks. The projects ran for six weeks during the semester. We checked in with
the teams during regular class meetings and worked with individual teams to resolve
issues or assist them in identifying information or resources for their assignments.
We periodically visited the Zoho project web sites to check on team progress and to
determine which students were actively engaged and which were not contributing.
The students submitted their assignments near the end of the semester. Each
professor graded each assignment individually and then we compared grades. We
made adjustments so that the students on each team received the same relative grade
on the project at each institution. Giving all members of each team the same grade also
replicates the real world where all members of the team are held accountable for team
outcomes. The final deliverable was a reflection paper from each student. Students
were asked to write a one to two page individual paper to assess the experience and to
reflect upon what they learned from the experience. These papers, along with our own
reflections helped us understand elements of the project that worked well and things
we will change the next time we conduct such a project. The following summary of
outcomes reflects our review of the project.
