Day of the Dead
The Day of the Dead is a traditional Mexican holiday. For two days every year, Mexican families honor their dead relatives and friends.
But, it is not a sad day. It is a time of remembering and happiness. During this holiday, families go to the cemeteries and decorate the graves with fruit, candles, bread, chocolates and flowers.
They play music, tell stories about the dead and even have picnics in the cemeteries.
This is radio WMEX reporting from the "Phoenix" bakery. It's November the 1st and the two-day celebrations of the Day of the Dead are about to begin.
All the bakers here are busy preparing "Pan de Muerto," the bread of the dead.
As the breads are coming out of the oven, customers are rushing to buy them. Many of these customers come back to this bakery every year to buy these traditional breads in different shapes.
I've already seen round breads, breads in the shape of skulls and some in the shape of human beings and animals.
Inside some of the loaves the bakers are putting plastic toy skeletons, because they know that it's good luck to bite into bread and find these toys.
Well, our time is up, so happy holiday to all of our listeners.
