Phnom Penh for further studies, lodging at Wat Unnalom. While there he became
involved with “the contemptible Son Ngoc Thanh” (Chandler et al. 1988,
234; see also Chandler 2000, 64–65). Now, Vens. Khiev Chum, Pang Khat, and
So Hay were among the Phnom Penh–based recruiting sergeants of Thanh, and
Hu Nim’s confession suggests that they recruited another senior CPK figure,
Chan Chakrei, while he was still a monk attached to the Buddhist Institute
(Chandler et al. 1988, 298).14
