Brazil is the largest sugarcane producer in the world, responsible for approximately 38% of global production. In the season 2014/2015, the production level reached 634.8 millions metrictons. It is estimated that 28% (on a dry weight basis) of the harvested sugarcane corresponds to lignocellulosic byproducts, bagasse and straw (tops, dry and green leaves), which represent two-thirds of the energetic potential of sugarcane.Currently, sugarcane bagasse, produced during sugarcane milling, is widely used as a fuel in a cogeneration process for energy production, and as a feedstock in bioprocesses research for production of lignocellulosic ethanol and chemicals
