B. coagulans XZL4 is an excellent sugar-utilizing producer of
optically pure L-lactate, with the merits of high yield and high
optical purity. The ability of this strain to utilize the cheap
raw material, Jerusalem artichoke powder, for fermentation
means the bacterium is an efficient producer of L-lactate. The
use of corn steep powder, which is a cheap raw agricultural
by-product, could further reduce the materials costs involved
in L-lactate production. By combining the strain’s excellent production
traits with the cheap raw materials, Jerusalem artichoke
powder and corn steep powder, an efficient and simplified strategy
for the industrial production of polymer-grade L-lactate was
established.
