SCREENING OF BEST-BET FORAGE SPECIES
Major efforts to screen and identify best-bet forage species began in
1974 when the FAO-Ministry of Agriculture Forage Project established a large forage nursery at RRC-Mtwapa. This nursery included legume and grass species that both had been collected in the region and introduced from outside the region. Over 200 species were planted (CARS Annual Reports 1974-80). Among the legume species collected in the region were Clitoria ternatea L., Capsicum spp. and Crotalaria emarginata Benth. Among those introduced from outside were Centrosema pubescens Benth., Macroptilium atropurpureum (DC.) Urban and Leucaena leucocephala (Lam.) De Wit.
