4. Conclusions
We designed an efficient batch system for lipid production by the oleaginous yeast Cryptococcus curvatus using two different car-bon sources derived from a brown macroalga, L. japonica: mannitol and VFAs obtained by anaerobic fermentation of alginate with a mixed culture. This is the first demonstration of microbial oil pro-duction by bioconversion of macroalgae without addition of any other carbon sources or nutrients. This study has shown that man-nitol and VFAs derived from alginate fermentation are favorable feedstock for lipid production. Future work can focus on optimiz-ing and scaling up this process.
