Is there one homogeneous variety of language spoken in Canada? Some authors claim that Canadians (unless they are trained phoneticians) are unable to identify in conversation the province or region of origin of their fellow Canadians without asking them specifically. This, however, seems to be the view represented rather by non-Canadian authors. Canadians are usually well able to identify fellow Canadians in an English-speaking crowd and many believe that they can identify the origin of other Canadian speakers. While Professor Higgins, the expert on pronunciation in Shaw's Pygmalion, would have found Canadian dialects rather boring, Canadians find it very convenient and reassuring that they may travel for many days without really noticing much linguistic variation.
