The study population included all Swedish residents who were in the age range 18 to 65 during
1990–2008 according to the Register of the Total Population and who fulfilled the study’s parental
country of birth criteria. The normal retirement age in Sweden is 65 years, and persons
were excluded from the analysis when they turned 65 because we wished to study the influence
of socioeconomic determinants of mortality among offspring of immigrants in the working age
population. The cohort was followed for all-cause mortality and mortality due to external and
natural causes by record linkage to the Cause of Death Register during 1990–2008. The study
cohort consisted of 4,648,143 persons (see Table 1).
