DANGERS OF CONFLICT
THE EFFORT IS NOT TO PREVENT CONFLICT BUT TO SOLVE IT IN THE APPROPRIATE WAY.
Dangers:
Negative Emotions
-anger
-fear
-pain
-humiliation
-sadness
2. BECOMING ILL
Conflict causes stress that leads to insomnia, ulcers and heart disease
3. SAYING THINGS YOU DON’T MEAN
You can easily hurt other people when you are angry and cannot undo the damage
4. BAD RELATIONSHIPS
Conflict can disrupt families or can cause loss of job
5. VIOLENCE
Arguments can lead to aggression, injury and even death.
Well-managed conflict can also be constructive, helping to ‘clear the air’, releasing emotion and stress, and resolving tension, especially if those involved use it as an opportunity to increase understanding and find a way forward together out of the conflict situation.
NEGOTIATION-the use of compromise to reach an agreement
-you negotiate your salary
-companies negotiate with
customers
-labor unions negotiate with
companies
-countries negotiate for peace
“Win-lose situation”=> “Win-win situation”
Fair-Fair-both sides get some of what they want and give up something they want. (practice)
VIOLENCE
What would you do if you see someone being beaten?
The cost of violence on victims: bodily integrity, pain loss of life
The cost of violence on society: large medical costs, large legal costs, cultural conflict.
Violent behavior is learned from family, sports games, movies
“If the misery of others leaves you
indifferent and with no
feelings of sorrow, you
should not be called a
human being.” ~
Sa’adi, thirteenth century
Persian poet.
CONFLICT RESOLUTION PROCESS
IDENTIFY THE PROBLEMsometimes this step alone is enough for conflict resolution
IDENTIFY POSSIBLE SOLUTIONS
Come up with as many solutions as you can think of
3. EVALUATE EACH SOLUTION
Does it solve the problem?
Does everyone agree with it?
4. CHOOSE THE BEST SOLUTION
Everyone needs to agree on the choice
5. SEE IF THE SOLUTION IS WORKING
6.AGREE TO DISAGREE-If the conflict cannot be solved the solution may simply be acceptance
