Motivation is “the combination of forces that leads people to behave as they do. It has energizing, directing and maintenance of components. More specifically, it is the forces that influence enthusiasm, directs employees’ energy toward attainment of an outcome, and maintains behavior even when that behavior does not lead to an immediate, extrinsic reward. Motivation is not something managers to employees but managers can and should influence motivation in their employees.” (Wright and Noe, 1996)
