A subset of first-year participants were followed into their second-year in
the School of Engineering. Selected due to ease of accessibility, second-year
chemical engineering students enrolled in CHE 205, Chemical Engineering
Calculations, were surveyed in during the fall of 2005 (n = 60) and the spring of
2006 (n = 39). CHE 205 is a three-credit course required of all chemical
engineering students for progression in the department’s curriculum. The
course covers introductory material and energy balances on chemical
processes. Descriptions of the two CHE 205 sections included in the study are
presented in Table 3-1.
