The geriatric patient is 7 times more likely to have oral cancer, and the chance of survival improves with early detection. The information is important because the new Minimum Data Set (MDS) version 3.0 was implemented on October 1, 2010, and has an increased emphasis on oral health for NPs and nurses working in LTC.[12] The MDS 3.0 is the latest version of assessment paperwork developed by the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services to improve nursing home care.[13,14] This document includes an oral assessment and is to be filled out by NPs and nurses when the resident is admitted to an LTC facility, periodically, and upon discharge
