Fasting does not just affect the body, but it affects the mental condition. Eating disorders may appear to only be physical disorders; however, they are physical as well as mental disorders. Eating disorders are considered a “complex medical/psychiatric illness” (Russell) due to the fact that they cause not only physical harm to sufferers, but also may lead to several psychological issues. Some of these effects, which will be discussed later, include damage to the digestive system, bones, heart, etc., and may cause other mental illnesses such as depression, anxiety, and obsessive-compulsive behavior/disorder.
