I have learned a lot about myself this semester, as a teacher and as a learner. I think that the assignments I have chosen to do in the learning portfolio have helped me to reflect on my ideas and views of what teaching is really about, and have allowed me to grow and challenge myself.

The first point from the evaluation criteria that I think I learned a lot in was ‘all of the important elements of the activities are identified and addressed in a reflective and synthesized manner’. The item in my learning portfolio that really helps me to demonstrate this point is the ‘Responding to and Assessment Parable’. I read the story more than once to make sure I really understood everything that was going on before I tried to answer the questions. After reading and looking at the questions in detail I gave myself time to think critically about them and try to come up with answers. After developing the answers I did, I believe I organized them in a way such that they are easy to understand and are detailed but concise. One of the points in the story that really hit home with me was the fact that if we set up our students to learn one way, but test their knowledge in another way, they will not be successful. I believe that I now really understand that since students learn in different ways, they must be assessed in different ways if we want them to show their skills and abilities in the best way. Looking back on my past experiences and what I have learned during my field experience, I now see that the way we assess is just as important as the way we teach. I want to set up the best possible scenarios for my students to succeed, and so I will need to keep changing my methods of assessment to suit the students and their needs. In my response to the story of the inhabitants of Statureland I believe that I explained my point of view on this subject in an integrated and succinct way.

The next section that I think I showed improvement in is ‘responses reflect critical and creative thinking on the issues involved’. The assignment that got me thinking in a more creative way the most was the one where we had to open closed questions. I really got to understand the usefulness of these types of questions and they helped me to see that students can learn so much more, or show you that they know so much more if you give them an open-ended question rather than a simple closed one. Students need to learn to think on their own, and open-ended questions allow them to do this! I also learned that it would be easier, as a teacher, to have a completely open-ended question and turn it more guided if need be, than it would be to have the students answer a closed question and try to pull more information out of that answer. From my field experience I saw first-hand that students right now are not prepared to learn through problem solving. They are used to being told how to do questions and how to get the right answer. I need to remember this as a teacher when I am making up the questions so that my students will not become frustrated and give up. This assignment made me come up with my own ways to open the questions, and that allowed me to think of how I would use them in my actual classroom. I was able to open the questions in more ways that one, which is useful since all classes are different and will learn best in different ways. The different types of questions can teach the students different things and can also show many different things that the students know. Opening up questions is now something I want to become more skilled at for the sake of my students.

I have always had a hard time understanding the term personal and professional growth, and how I was supposed to know if I was achieving it or not. I believe that this semester, and this class, has helped me to do so. I have increased my ability to ‘reflect on (and demonstrate) personal and professional growth and learning’. I need to be a lifelong and active learner if I want to be a teacher that helps all students learn. I need to become aware of new techniques and methods to teach different subjects, and reflect on these experiences so that I can make the next experience even better. I have now realized that I will never know all the answers and I will not know what to do in every situation, but the important thing for me is to learn and grow from these happenings. Collaboration with other teachers and getting to know your students are also key if I want to be a successful part of the school that I am in. I believe that my blog entries are a good indicator of how I came to understand the things I do now. It allows me to reflect, almost daily, on the things that I experience throughout the day. It is a good way to look back and realize why I teach the way I do, and if something needs to change in order to become a better teacher. While writing the blog I came to realize that I have not lost my passion for mathematics like I thought I had. It all came flooding back as soon as I got into a real classroom environment with real students. I was extremely excited upon realizing this fact, and am grateful that I took the time to write about my experiences that helped me see this. I plan to keep a journal or blog during my internship as well because I believe it will help me greatly in becoming a better teacher and reflector.

The other assignment that helps to show how I have grown is the Mathematics in Literature. I chose to read Flatland: A Romance of Many Dimensions by Edwin A. Abbott. I had never read a book about mathematics before and I was skeptical about how much I would enjoy it. I was pleasantly surprised however, and now see a whole new dimension to mathematics and what it can do. Reading this book made me look at math in a whole new way, and helped me see that math can be used to explain many different things in a clear and logical way. I am going to try to get my students to do an activity like this one in hopes that they will come to realize some of the same things that I did, and peak their interest in the subject.

After writing this letter I think I am between a 2 and a 3 on the holistic scale. I think I really grew as a teacher this semester and learned a lot about teaching and being in the classroom, and a lot about my views and opinions, but I didn’t have as much time as I needed to really think and reflect on some of these assignments to make them the best that I could have.
