The chromatograms shown in Fig. 2 are ten replicate injections of a 10 component amino acid mixture obtained on an AFT 2.1 mm i.d. column (50 × 2.1 mm) (Fig. 2a) operating in PSF mode, such that 21% of the solvent flow eluted via the radial central exit port. Note that in Fig. 2a the data acquisition was continuous, necessary because the stop-start process of the data acquisition process adversely delayed the analysis through-put. Data acquisition was subsequently stopped and restarted only for each new sample of standard. The chromatographic analysis undertaken in Fig. 2a utilised a volumetric flow rate of 4.5 mL/min, with 0.9 mL/min being directed to the MS detector. The chromatograms in Fig. 2b are the ten extracted ion chromatograms of phenylalanine; extracted from the chromatographic data displayed in Fig. 2a. In these analyses, the ten replicate injections were undertaken in less than 4 min. The exact injection protocol allowed for a 6 s injection period and an 18 s separation. The analysis time for the separation could have been reduced further, as no components were observed to elute beyond 15 s, but to avoid any cross contamination between samples especially in the analysis of the fruit juices, 3 s of additional runtime was included between each injection.
