Generally, different methodologies have been adopted for changing the color saturation, clarity and trading value of the gemstones. These approaches are: (i) heat treatment in different chemical environments, (ii) high energy , alpha particle or electron beam irradiation, (iii) single or multi-color layer coating, and(iv) laser treatment. In ruby, the rhombohedral phase of the Al2O3 i.e. -Al2O3 is purely an insulator with band gap around 9 eV [5]. Having such a wide band gap facilitates the dopant substitution in the -Al2O3 matrix by using the above process. Other dopants apart from Cr3+ which alter the properties of ruby are: Ti3+in tun-able laser material [6], Mg3+ in photo-chromic material [7], Er3+ for different optical properties [8] and Be2+to induce different verities of color in the ruby matrix.
