Power Requirements
Pellet production is an energy intensive process, however the ends justify the means. The hammer mill
and pellet mill demand the most energy, which usually means they require a three-phase electricity
supply. Three-phase supply is only normally found in farming and industrial locations. However many
locations do not have three phase supply and installation can be very expensive. Before purchasing
pellet production equipment suitable power requirements must be available. If the installation of
three-phase power is not possible for logistical or cost reasons there are other solutions.
For isolated locations diesel generators are one possibility, or powering the equipment directly from a
diesel engine maybe more suitable. Some systems may also use diesel-powered hydraulics.
In some cases phase converters are used to run three-phase equipment from a single-phase electrical
supply. However there are limitations and possible issues with this solution. For instance the motors
may not run at their stated power rating, and motor torque can be an issue.
